Meaningful, Inexpensive Holiday Gift Guide

The holidays can be a richly rewarding and rejuvenating time, when we take a break from our work commitments and usual obligations to reignite connections with family and friends, and to restore our bodies and minds through meaningful rituals or special celebrations.

It always feels like a lost opportunity when we “have to” spend lots of time shopping during this rare break when we could be doing something rejuvenating and inspiring.

It also feels unfortunate when we end up under time pressure before an event where gifts are exchanged, so we end up just buying something, ANYthing,  to avoid being empty handed. When we find or make something that truly fits the person we’re giving to, it can be so meaningful and impactful.

The most meaningful gifts come from the heart and show that we know the person well. When we tailor our gifts to their interests and preferences, it makes it even more special. Truly, it IS the thought that counts – both for the recipient AND ourselves. When our thoughts around gift-giving feel like they feed US, then the holiday spirit is alive and well.

That’s my inspiration for this gift guide – to give us some ideas for thoughtful, inexpensive gifts so we can put our precious resources of time and money towards whatever we may consciously choose this holiday season.  (Might I suggest gifting one or two of these to yourself this year?)

Framed Photo: Who doesn’t LOVE a printed photo of a special moment or person?! Especially as they’ve become so rare. Visit the website of Walgreens Pharmacy or CVS to easily upload a photo from your phone, and then pick it up in the store (where you may be able to find a frame, too).

Personalized Song Playlist: Create a playlist of songs that remind you of the person or songs you think they would enjoy.

Homemade Laddoos: Put an Ayurvedic twist on the usual holidays cookies with these Date Nut Laddoos or Sesame Sweets and wrap them in a decorative tin or jar.

A “Gift of Time” Coupon: Make a certificate (and have fun decorating it!) with an offer to spend time together, like a “Dinner date night” or “Yes Day” (when you say “yes” to anything they request), or a “Crafting Afternoon” where you bring the supplies, or “Baked Treats of your Choice.”

Indoor Plants: A small potted plant can bring life to their space and symbolize growth and care. Finding a special or unusual plant is a rare gift.

Chyavanprash Jam: This herbal medicinal jam is a traditional recipe that is prized for boosting the immune system – a great winter gift. I particularly appreciate organic versions like this one from Pure Indian Foods.

Collaged Quote: Find a quote or short poem that resonates with the person and print it out and frame it. You can add to it by collaging around the border of the quote.

Jar of Ghee: Make a batch of ghee and put it in a jar with a ribbon, and tell your recipient how to use it (just like butter or cooking oil, essentially!).

Nature Walk Kit: Put together a small kit with essentials for a nature walk – a map or guidebook of local trails, a bird identification guide, a trail mix, water bottle.

Personalized Mug: Customize a mug or water bottle on Zazzle.com with a quote, their name, or a photo.

Memory Jar: Fill a jar with notes recalling shared memories or reasons you appreciate them.

Herb Garden Kit: Give a small kit with pots, soil, and herb seeds for them to grow their own herbs in the spring. This can be so fun to compile!

Subscription to a Digital Magazine or Service: Find an affordable subscription related to their interests.

Handwritten Letter: Ok, this one may take a bit more time – but oh so worth it! Express your feelings and appreciation in a heartfelt letter. Share memories and let them know why they are important to you.

Ayurveda Cookbook: My favorites are the Everyday Ayurveda Cookbook by Kate O’Donnell, and What to Eat for How You Feel by Divya Alter.
