This delicious beverage is the epitome of summer – easy, tasty, and cooling from the inside out. The refreshing quality of watermelon makes this recipe easy to drink, which helps keep us hydrated as the summer heat literally pulls moisture out of us. Mint adds a complementary zing as well as more cooling power. Mixing the fruit with water lightens it up, making it less likely to create a feeling of heaviness in the belly (excess Kapha). Feel free to substitute watermelon with any fresh fruit you like.
Although you may be tempted to pour this drink over ice, Ayurveda typically advises drinking beverages at room temperature, so as not to dampen our digestive power (which is already diminished in summer). The cardamom and salt help the body digest all this luscious liquid and support a weaker digestive fire. I love sipping this through the heat of the afternoon – it’s best to enjoy fruit in between meals rather than with your food, as fruit is digested quickly and can interfere with proper digestion of your meal.
